Is it a good thing that I sometimes have the hardest time deciding how to classify my pictures (almost wanted to toss a coin between surreal, fantasy, and animals)? Anyway, I put it in animals even though it's not meant to be just a bunch of birds (I think it's a little too realistic to be surreal, and the mythological associations of ravens, doves, and swans really isn't enough to call it fantasy). The original idea for this was just some kind of shadow lamp with designs on it, and living things coming from the designs. It's WAY easier as just an idea. I knew I wanted a raven and a dove - at some point while I was sketching ideas the swans came into the picture and ended up taking it over (the shadowlamp thing still works a fairly well, and there's the whole black/white contrast, so I kept the title). The central design formed by the swans' wings and the shadowlamp is also, well, egg-shaped. Have no idea why I was on such a bird kick. BTW this took bloody FOREVER (well, over a week). I don't want to even think about how much graphite is on this page (30*40cm) The formal/academic/stuffy explanation of this picture is on the 'print' page.

What a beautiful piece! You have such an eye for contrast. I love how you work between the dark and the light, it's brilliant. =) Lots of work pays off.. I have trouble working that long on sketches anymore, so seeing you do it is an inspiration. :)

Oh WOW! This came out just beautifully! The contrast is spectacular. It seems serine but with an underlying shadow/touch of evil to it. Just my opinion.

On a side note, do you sell prints of your work?

Thanks for the comments. About prints: I was thinking of getting a print account here, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have some things on cafepress, but the prices there seem high to me (I don't know how they compare to DA, but based on the prices at the print shop in my area). I also haven't really sold much at cafepress, so I've been slow to update what is there. Eventually I will probably get around to getting a subscription or a print account (or whatevr it is) here - that seems the easier thing to do. I don't currently make my own prints though.

Thanks :) I feel like I want to say more but I can't make it sound right - probably it's because it's morning (5AM) and I'm still awake. I have to be at work at 10.30 today. This should be interesting. But thank you very much for the comment.
